Ash fell on the beach like snow, and drivers turned on their headlights in the smoky daytime streets yesterday as wildfires that have reduced entire neighborhoods to moonscapes skipped through the hills of Southern California and threatened 30,000 more homes. I had a lesson in diversity last week in New Orleans, where I found myself so completely out of my element that when a couple of young women kept calling me "Ma'am" I took their tone for sarcastic. On Saturday, May 31 Wellington Heights Secondary School celebrated Prom 2008. Students stepped from freshly washed cars, hummer and bus limousines into a romantic setting of flowers and fairy-lights. This year?s theme was Moonlight in the Garden. Find yourself: A display case at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library holds dozens of snapshots: kids with Santa, tourists in front of the Golden Gate Bridge, women in Japanese clothing, graduates, a young woman doing the trick of hanging a spoon from her nose.
